Teaching piano requires imagination and creativity to solve students’ problems. This has pushed me to think in different ways about piano playing and explain abstract ideas in easy-to-understand ways. Doing so has also developed my own playing. I like to use Bartok’s Mikrokosmos because they were composed by Bartok himself for his own son, gradually getting more advanced, and provides a great progression for children and adults alike.
However, I also ensure that I assess the student’s own situation and needs. This way I find an appropriate pathway for their learning, using empathy to see the process from the student’s point of view to help achieve their goals. Teaching piano has encouraged me to be more engaged in and inspired about practice and skills development, leading to enjoyable lessons. Accompanying and assisting with St Laurence Choir has also been a very valuable learning experience in teaching young people as it requires communicating ideas to a group of people, rather than one to one, which has inspired a flexible mindset during rehearsals.
